Chocolate Orange Layer Cake with Ganache

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1/2 cup orange juice
  • 1 tbsp grated orange zest

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla. Beat on medium speed for 2 minutes.
  4. Stir in boiling water, orange juice, and zest.
  5. Pour batter evenly into prepared pans.
  6. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Let cool for 10 minutes, then remove from pans to cool completely.
  8. Prepare ganache by heating cream and pouring over chopped chocolate, waiting a few minutes, then stirring until smooth.
  9. Once cake layers are cooled, layer with ganache between them and on top.

Notes

  • For a deeper orange flavor, consider adding orange extract to the batter.
  • This cake can be made a day ahead and stored in the refrigerator.
